to go over; the past
过去 can mean going over, or time that has gone.
Here it is moving away from the speaker.
to go back
回去 is returning away from where we are now.
Compare it with 回来.
to go down; to continue
下去 can mean going down, or continuing on.
Here it is going down.
to come down
下来 is coming down toward the speaker.
Pair it with 下去.
to rise; to start
起来 can mean standing up, or an action getting started.
Put it after the verb.
to come out
出来 is coming out toward the speaker.
Compare it with 出去.

从 names the starting point. 往 names the direction. 离 names the distance from a place. Direction verbs like 过去, 回去, 下去, 下来, 起来, and 出来 move a person or an action.
